You may be able to get an accident replacement car while you’re on your P plates. Acorn accepts applications from eligible not-at-fault drivers with a provisional licence, including drivers under 25. Your age, licence conditions, the vehicle available and the accident details still need to be checked.
If you’ve been told you cannot hire a car on P plates, find out whether that advice concerns an ordinary rental booking or an accident replacement service. Different providers have different requirements. A refusal from one rental company does not tell you whether Acorn can help.
Acorn provides accident replacement vehicles for eligible drivers in Melbourne and Sydney. Applications are subject to approval, availability and the rental terms.
Age and Licence Requirements
Acorn’s published driver requirements say that:
- Drivers aged 18 or over can drive Acorn’s Small or Medium vehicle classes.
- Drivers aged 21 or over can access other fleet classes, subject to the vehicle being suitable for their licence.
- A provisional or full licence is required. Learner’s permits are not accepted.
- Where a third-party supplier provides the vehicle, its requirements include a minimum age of 21 and a full licence.
Being under 25 does not, by itself, rule you out. Tell the team your age, licence stage and any conditions when you apply, so they can check the available options before arranging a car.
For example, a 19-year-old provisional driver meets the published age requirement for an Acorn Small or Medium car, but not the third-party supplier’s minimum age. The accident and licence checks still apply.
Choosing a Car You Can Legally Drive
Your licence restrictions still apply when the car is a temporary replacement. Before accepting a vehicle, check the exact model and transmission, along with any conditions on your licence.
For example, a driver restricted to automatic vehicles should flag that before collection. The NSW Government’s licence conditions guide explains how conditions apply and where to check them. Some conditions are not printed on the licence itself.
In Victoria, use the probationary vehicle rules and database to check whether you can drive the proposed car. If its status is unclear, resolve that before driving it. A rental company offering you a vehicle does not remove your responsibility to comply with your licence conditions.
Also explain what you need the car for. A daily commute, child seat or equipment you normally carry can affect which available vehicle is practical. Be specific about those needs rather than requesting an unfamiliar model solely because it looks similar to your own car.
What to Have Ready When You Apply
Gather your licence and vehicle details, the other driver’s contact and insurance information, and a clear account of what happened. Keep any photographs, witness details and claim reference numbers together. Acorn’s guide to exchanging details after an accident explains the information to record.
If you were driving a parent’s car, make clear who owns it and who was driving. Those may be different people, and the application needs an accurate account of both.
For the not-at-fault service, Acorn needs to assess the accident and the identified, insured other driver. Your provisional licence does not settle the question of who caused the accident. If the accounts differ, provide the evidence you have and explain what remains uncertain.
Arranging the Replacement Around Your Repairs
Let Acorn know whether your car is already off the road, whether a repairer has assessed it and when repairs are booked. The team can use that information to discuss an appropriate start date after approval.
Do not assume you need to wait until the day you drop your car off to make an enquiry. Equally, submitting an application does not mean a replacement is booked. Confirm the vehicle, start date, collection or delivery arrangements and paperwork with the team. Acorn’s replacement vehicle process explains the steps.
At handover, take time to check the controls, mirrors and seating position. Ask how to report a problem with the vehicle and whom to contact if the repair schedule changes. Read the rental agreement before signing, including any responsibilities for fuel, tolls, damage or other charges.
P-Plate Replacement Car FAQs
Can I apply while I’m on red P plates?
You can ask Acorn to assess your application if you meet its age and provisional-licence requirements. Red P plates alone do not establish eligibility: confirm your age, licence conditions and the proposed vehicle.
Can a 17-year-old get an Acorn replacement car?
Acorn’s published minimum driving age is 18 for its Small and Medium classes. If you are 17, discuss your circumstances with the team before making transport arrangements; do not assume a booking in a parent’s name permits you to drive.
Can a parent or partner also drive the replacement car?
Additional drivers must meet the relevant age and licence requirements. Give Acorn their licence details before the rental begins and confirm they are included in the arrangements.
What if I’m unsure whether I qualify?
Apply for an eligibility assessment or call Acorn on 1300 22 67 67. Explain your licence stage, age and accident circumstances. The not-at-fault service requires assessment of the identified, insured other driver and is subject to approval and terms.
